AO-27 failed in October, 2012, and attempts to restore it have failed. PO-101 is usually on Fridays and Sundays over North America. AO-92 is in the L/V mode on Wednesdays for 24 hours and U/V the rest of the time. There are severak FM bird operational at this time: SO-50, AO-91, AO-92, PO-101. If you can't hear any satellites, ask for help. Just because you can't hear a satellite doesn't mean that you are not getting in and possibly interfereing with those running less power. It is easy to transmit into a bird but much more difficult to hear it. Don't announce your call and grid if you are not hearing others well enough to copy their callsigns. If you are not hearing anyone, you are likely not hearing the satellite. SO-50 is difficult to hear due to its 1/4 watt output and its propensity to polarity shifts. Most SO-50 daylight passes over the United States are very active. Once you are hearing, call someone you can copy and make your contact. Most importantly, please do not transmit unless you are hearing stations well enough to copy their callsigns. Before you know it you'll be at ease with operating on the birds. If it doesn't go very well for you the first time, regroup, determine how you could do better and then try again. Don't get excited listen to the call and then respond accordingly. A new callsign on the birds creates interest, especially when the new station is hearing well and responding to calls. Or have someone log for you so you can work those who call you. Use a digital voice recorder if you have one so you don't have to write anything down. Someone else will likely call you immediately if your callsign is unfamiliar. Listen to the protocol, know your grid and the exchange and by all means, keep listening after you make your first contact. AO-51, which was the easiest bird to work, became a silent key at the end of 2011. Likely that will be SO-50/AO-91/AO-92 (since AO-27 and AO-51 are no longer operational).
